This is a draft of obituary to be published in the Richmond Times-Dispatch today of Woody Landers. He was a well-known magician to many in the D.C. VA. MD area. "Roger "Woody" Landers passed away tragically Monday, May 14, 2007. He is survived by two brothers, Thomas M. Landers, Richard N. Landers and wife Anne Marie Landers; one sister, Mary L. Taylor and husband Robert P. Taylor; three children, Mindy L. Sawyer and husband Seldon, Wade C. Landers and wife Edwina, Tami S. Landers and husband Kevin White; three grandchildren, Sydni, Averi, Megan, and one great-grandchild, Kylie and a host of nieces and a nephew. He is pre-deceased by his mother and father, Maurice and Ursula Landers and his twin brother George Cauley Landers. 1. Woody was a master magician and for many years was a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians. He had an enthusiastic fascination with magic for which he served for over 50 years. He was a charter member of the Society of American Magicians Williamsburg Assembly. His specialty was eye-popping sleight of hand, and Woody lectured at many magicians' societies, clubs and conventions. Amateurs and technically-skilled alike sought him out for advice and intructions. If you sincerely loved the art of magic, you became Woody's friend. The magical fingers are now still, but the man and his wonderful talents will never be forgotten. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, May 18, 2007 at Mount Calvary Cemetery, 1400 S. Randolph St., Richmond, VA, 23220. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to one's favorite charity. See what's free at AOL.com. |

Barry's Magic Shop Move
Barry's Magic Shop Newsletter
About our big move:
We are moving to 5544 Nicholson Lane, Rockville, MD 20852 and our last day at the Wheaton location will be Saturday, June 2. Our new store is above the Spa East (no elevator) and near an Exxon gas station, Jerry's Sub, Theatre Vision and across the street from the old Eatzis'. We are practically at the intersection of Rockville Pike and Nicholson Lane. We have to do construction and hope to reopen sometime in the middle of July.
After we move our merchandise, we will have a fire sale in the old shop on a Saturday or a Sunday in June and try to sell off everything we do not bring to the new store at practically give-away prices. We will notify everyone when we are ready. This is a huge and back-breaking move (whew!). We've never moved before so we cannot tell you the exact date for anything yet. Plus, there are always delays during construction.
Our new store is 4,000 square feet and just beautiful. We are having a small theater seating 40 people. In September we are planning on hosting Magic Idol, similar to American Idol. The grand prize will be a $250.00 gift certificate from Barry's Magic Shop, a trophy and your photo will be displayed at the magic shop. The winner is selected by audience votes.
Think about being a contestant. You can perform close up or stage magic. We're probably going to have two series; one for children and one for adults and it will probably be held on Saturday evenings. The audience ticket price will be $10 and you will be able to buy seat tickets on line.
In addition to Magic Idol, we will hold monthly lectures and magic classes. We'll notify you with more details when we have them all figured out. We are totally excited about our new location when we open and we hope you visit us.
Stop by our present location (Georgia Avenue, Wheaton, MD) to see the magic shop of 33 years for the last and final time.
We do want to thank everyone who wrote letters in our behalf. If it wasn't for all of your support, we would not be here today.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.

MONKEY BUSINESS
Moving on to our social portion of the meeting, the following compeers entertained us with their contributions to the evenings theme -- Here, There and Everywhere. (The following is an abbreviated report of the performances.)
Our President, James Munton, performed his rendition of the 3-shell game using Karl Norman's set of brass cups. Nicely done James.
Our President of Vice, Hugh Turley, directed us using the "crazy arrow" and then related a story about his acquaintance "Farky Hollis" and a correct prediction.
Larry Lipman, caused 4 Kings and 4 Queens to change with 4 Jacks and back again as he performed "Royal Robbers."
Ray Eyler, Performed both phases of Larry West's "4 of a Kind". Trying to find a selected card seemingly missed on 4 tries, however, in the end the selected card was found among the 3 cards of the same value.
Noland Montgomery, apparently tore his newspaper before our eyes only to show that it was really whole in his presentation of "No Tear."
Lee Eyler, regaled us with a presentation of the "Amazing Jumping Arrow."
Nicholas Miller, presented "No Where. . .Then Right There" a Dunbury Delusion.
Max Eyler, caused circles to become squares in his performance of KeeWest's "Squared Circles."

Next month--All You Need is Love
MONKEY BUSINESS
The Social Portion of the Meeting brought forward the performance by Joe Tessmer of the " Missing Think"- The spectator thought of a card. Joe gave her 10 plastic sheets with cards printed on them. The spectator selected the sheet that had her cards printed on it. Joe picked the thought of card.
Noland Montgomery preformed "Professor's Nightmare"- Relating it to the job as a spaghetti cutter and the problems he had trying to cut the spaghetti into even pieces.
Larry Lipman was next with "Down Under" The cards were shown to be in a "Helter Skelter" condition. Spectator selected a number and Larry began to count the cards in a down under fashion. He put one card down and the next card went on the bottom of the packet. He continued in this fashion and all of the cards were put into numerical order.
Steve Javes showed us "Surprise Card" where the spectator mentally selects a card from packet; Steve correctly named after he read spectators mind.
Erik Feinberg regaled us with the "Mystery China Box"- The box had two clear cylinders. Marbles of different colors were dropped into cylinders at spectators choice. All marbles ended up in same cylinder. He followed this with "Credit Slasher"- A Credit card put into holder. Tiny sword was pushed through credit card. Card was removed undamaged.
Matt Hiller was nest with "Indy 5 to 1" Matt explained how he went to McDonald's and was given the incorrect change. He was given five 1's and he changed them to five 5's. He offered to teach a spectator to change his bills. Spectator was given a one and folded it into eighths. Matt folded a 5. He placed both into his fist. He appeared to give the spectator the 5, but he actually had the 1 dollar bill.
Lars Klores performed "Nailed"- The spectator selected and signed card. Lars selected a card, and gave the spectator his choice of which card to hold. He then took the remaining card (his) and put it into an envelope that was sealed with tape and stapled to a board. The envelope was cut open and the card inside was the spectator's card that switched places with Lars' card.
Jim Flanigan showed us his version of the "Gemini Twins" – Jim's twins involved Santa and Mrs. Claus. They went to Paris where they ran into his twin brother and her twin sister. This Xmas version had a surprise ending when a magician appeared.
Dwight Redman, the ever vigilant note taker couldn't remember what he did, that is other than taking notes for the meeting and not recording my effect.

Last-minute addition:
COMPEERS,
It has been brought to our attention that although the office of the Vice President is considered the invisible office, our V-P, Hugh Turley, was present at our last meeting and yes he performed. We are told that Hugh Turley did a rather clever bit with a deck of marked backs with catchy words on them. Sorry that we can not go into more detail, but our spies did not get the full story. Sorry for the omission
EGG-BAG December
December's theme is Helter Skelter--The lyrics may give you some idea or just go helter skelter about picking you effect to perform.
The theme for next month is Here, There and Everywhere
To help you get started this month--Below are the lyrics to the Beetles Song–Make of it what you will: (Remember if you can't follow the theme, you are expected to perform an effect of your choice anyway.)
HELTER SKELTER
When I get to the bottom I go back to the top of the slide
Where I stop and I turn and I go for a ride
Till I get to the bottom and I see you again
Yeah yeah yeah
Do you, don't you want me to love you
I'm coming down fast but I'm miles above you
Tell me, tell me, tell me, come on tell me the answer
You may be a lover but you ain't no dancer
Helter skelter, helter skelter, helter skelter yeah
Will you, won't want me to make you
I'm coming down fast but don't let me break you
Tell me, tell me, tell me the answer
You may be a lover but you ain't no dancer
Look out helter skelter, helter skelter, helter skelter
Look out 'cause here she comes
When I get to the bottom I go back to the top of the slide
And I stop and I turn and I go for a ride
And I get to the bottom and I see you again
Yeah yeah yeah
Well do you, don't want me to make you
I'm coming down fast but don't let me break you
Tell me, tell me, tell me your answer
You may be a lover but you ain't no dancer
Look out helter skelter, helter skelter, helter skelter
Look out helter skelter, she's coming down fastYes she is, yes she is coming down fast
Although the meeting was postponed for a week and it was the evening before Thanksgiving we had a nice turnout.
THANKS TO THE GANG THAT WORK THE N.P.C. HOLIDAY PARTY
The Assembly's thanks go out to the following members that performed at the N.P.C. party:
Allen Barwick, Dwight Redman, in from Florida, Jack Chancellor, in from Ohio,Scott Miller, Lee Eyler, Ray Eyler and Rick Beatty. Thanks fellows for your efforts.
MONKEY BUSINESS–The social portion of the Meeting
November Meeting theme was "Fixing a Hole." First to perform was Noland Montgomery performed a clever one cup and ball routine with a final load that surprised everyone.
Following Noland was Lars Klores. Lars drew a map on a business card and punched a hole showing the location of a pot hole in the road right outside Lee's house. Using magic fingers he visibly slid the hole to another place on the card. It was such a good trick we unanimously voted him into the club.
Larry Lipman was next as he showed his sleight-of-hand proficiency with a very nice presentation of the Ninja Rings.
Erik Feinberg (and assistant) presented a miniature rendition of the Houdini Water Cell Escape. He also showed us a magic box that gave the illusion that a quarter turned into two. With a wave of the hand there really were two quarters!
Rick (The Legendary) Beatty took the theme seriously and proceeded to puncture holes in various parts of his body, including his tongue. Fortunately he was able to use his wizardry to fix the holes.
Hugh Turley had thoughts of black holes in space as he told the story using cards of the famous Star Trek series. Klingons appeared and disappeared as Kirk, Scotty and Co. were able to turn this from Star Trek into a Star Trick!
James Munton showed how to stop crooked gamblers from burning a hole in your pocket with a series of gambling demonstrations.
Alan Drew III, in town from Maine, performed some money switcheroo to everyone's delight.
Ray Eyler performed Lou Gallo's "Origami Bill". Ray penetrated both a card and dollar bill with a cocktail sword through a single hole, however, with the assistance of magic was able to slide the bill back and forth within the card. When he removed the sword and separated the bill and card there was only a single small whole in both.
Max Eyler, attending his first meeting (the third generation of Eylers to become members of the Assembly), performed an excellent packet trick with backs appearing and disappearing and followed up with a well-themed black hole trick. He too was voted into the Assembly.
Joe Tessmer called on the Christmas Spirits to cause a feather to magically twist and turn on a playing card - no strings, threads, or magnets!
Lee Eyler performed entertained us with his handling of Ring off String.
The meeting was adjourned to the Truman Lounge for further socializing.

The Theme: Penny Lane
Next month-- October 18, 2006 - LECTURE - by the one and only GEORGE WOO! This will be free to paid-up members so if you have not paid your dues yet get them to the Treasurer otherwise the admission will be $10 for all others.
About our Themes -- There was a brief discussion about the themes. It was decided to remind everyone that our themes are a way to spark members' creative juices. It is not necessary to strictly adhere to the theme. In fact, members can perform anything they like (although they must perform). However, in order to be considered for the monthly prize, you must make some effort to loosely incorporate the theme.
The president announced the winner of last month's meeting would receive a complete set of Tarbell magic books. Unfortunately, the winner, Noland Montgomery, was not present and so forfeited his prize. It was explained that you have to come to the following meeting to be eligible to receive the prize. The President hopes everyone will come to the next meeting because everyone has a good chance of winning!
To help you get started this month--below are the lyrics to the Beatles Song:
Penny Lane by Lennon/McCartney
Penny Lane there is a barber showing photographs of every head he's had the pleasure to know And all the people that come and go stop to say hello On the corner is a banker with a motor car the little children laugh at him behind his back And the banker never wears a "mac" in the pouring rain Very strange
Penny Lane is in my ears and in my eyes Wet beneath the blue suburban skies I sit and meanwhile back in
Penny Lane there is a fireman with an hourglass And in his pocket is a portrait of the Queen He likes to keep his fire engine clean It's clean machine
Penny Lane is in my ears and in my ears Full of fish and finger pies in summer meanwhile back
Behind the shelter in the middle of the roundabout A pretty nurse is selling poppies from a tray And though she feels as if she's in a play She is anyway Penny Lane, the barber shaves another customer We see the banker sitting waiting for a trim And then the fireman rushes in from the pouring rain very strange
Penny Lane is in my ears and in my eyes Wet beneath the blue suburban skies I sit and meanwhile back Penny Lane is in my ears and in my eyes There beneath the blue suburban skies Penny Lane.
SPECIAL NOTE
The Press Club has instituted a policy that requires us to be charged for you meals under a single check. Therefore, if you intend to dine, please to be prepared to pay in cash and keep track of your order. Don't forget to include tax & tip.

PERFORMANCES AT THE LAST MEETING
August is usually a quiet month when folks head out of town on vacation. The theme for our meeting was appropriately Ticket to Ride.
Jim Flanigan performed a moving presentation of the Passe Passe Bottles. His performance began with the reading of an Edgar Allan Poe poem and finished with a woman secretly returning to her former lover and drinking all his wine! It was a performance that showed how magic can truly touch the heart and stir the soul.
Joe Tessmer informed the audience about the British conversion to the decimal system in the early 1970's and caused an English penny to inexplicably change places with a half dollar. Some suspected there was a hint of Scotch in his soda that night.
Phil Milstead changed a dollar bill into a ticket, but the ticket was blank! So he summoned the magical spirits and by golly changed that blank paper into a ticket to ride.
Louis Hofheimer performed an incredible feat of trickery as he switched his five dollar bill for the ten that was tightly held in Laurie Curry's sweaty little palm. With the ten dollars he was able to buy his very own ticket to ride.
Lars Klores displayed a roll of tickets. He tore off a ticket and asked Lee to write his name upon it which Lee was able to do. He placed two tickets in Lee's hand and vanished the signed ticket. When Lee opened his hand, the ticket was attached betwixt the two he had placed there earlier. Amazing!
Matt Hiller explained that a dollar will still buy you a ticket in some places. Usually they punch a hole in the ticket to make sure you can't travel twice on the same ticket. To illustrate, he punched a hole in a dollar bill with his perfectly normal pen. When he removed the pen, he was able to heal the bill and there was no hole. The DC Metro are now reviewing their entire ticketing system.
James Munton was able to combine two very separate magic plots (card to wallet and the lie detector) and also brilliantly incorporate the evening's theme into his presentation. It's a shame he is not eligible for the prize because it was a moment of genius that left the room stunned.
Larry Lipman led everyone in an enthusiastic rendition of the Beatles' Ticket to Ride. He then described how journalists approach writing a big story by asking a single question, "when is it due?" He had a card selected, lost and found. But there was a twist to the story that would have made Roald Dahl proud. The selected card transformed into a ticket!!!
Lee Eyler showed two cards in just about the cleanest manner you can think of. He showed all six sides at least twice. Then just as we were about to ask him to stop, he clicked his fingers dramatically and a little ticket squeezed out from between the two cards. It was like watching a ticket being born.
Steve Javes provided an excellent example of how a magician shouldn't need fancy props and should be able to perform with anything that comes to hand. Using a couple of pieces of paper, Steve turned 5,000 years of scientific discovery on its head by causing one of the pieces of paper to reverse in on itself.
Buddy Smith told the story of lions eating Christians. Aces switched places with court cards in a way that nobody could explain. It reminded us that lions eating Christians is not something to laugh at, but is very fascinating to watch.
Ray Eyler played a game of chance with tickets and cards. As you might suspect, Ray's skill was evident and there was nothing left to chance.
Laurie Curry got mixed up and thought the theme was Bars and Trinkets. So she did a performance about leprechauns and bars of gold. It was a very good trick but will not win the prize.
The meeting closed and everyone adjourned to the bar to look at Laurie's trinkets.

WELCOME TO OUR NEW FACES & PERFORMERS: - George Bradley, Jessica Gilkey
MONKEY BUSINESS:
The social/magic portion of the meeting brought forward a full number of performers (it usually does since one of our rules is that all who attend must perform). The theme for the night was, "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." which brought out an unusual number of Hot Rod presentations.
Noland Montgomery was first to perform as he provided us with a very good Ambitious Card routine; the spectator signed card was repeatedly lost and found in the deck.
George Bradley gave a spectator an empty tube and a roll of lifesavers to put into the tube. A dollar bill was borrowed, torn in half. Half was vanished and the other half was put into an envelope and burned. Spectator opened tube to find lifesavers gone and half of the dollar was inside. George reached into his pocket and removed the other half of the dollar.
Christian Virdru provided us with a mental effect. He wrote the initials of his friend on a piece of paper, he asked a spectator to guess what his friend’s initials were and he wrote that down. He wrote his friend’s height and asked the spectator to guess the friend’s height. Last, he wrote the friend’s age and asked the spectator to guess the age. All of the answers matched. (Christian please excuse the spelling of you last name as it was hard to read on the list of performers.)
Lee Eyler showed his handling of an Al Leech effect, "Ace, Three Five." Lee had a spectator choose a card, showed it to the audience and lost it in the deck. The first two selections by Lee were wrong. The 3rd choice was correct. Lee then removed the pips from the card.
Augie Arnstein regaled us with a trip to the Horse Races - Augie placed 5 cards with horses drawn on the back in a row on the table. These represented the race course for the four Aces. The Aces were placed at the first horse card in a row. The spectator turned over a card from the deck and his Ace was advanced according to the number on the card. The Ace of Diamonds won.
Phil Milstead titled his performance as "Tie one on at the bar" a presentation of the Hot Rod
Dwight Redman showed 6 cards with different backs. All cards represented a different Casino where he lost money. All of the cards were shown to be Jokers and placed on the table one at a time. Five cards were turned over to reveal a Royal Flush and one card that was a Poker score card showing the order of the winning hands.
Lars Klores losing the spectator's selected card in the deck had the card named one step at a time, color- suite-value. Lars showed the card to spectator and slapped the card and the all pips fell off.
Joe Tessmer providing us with his handling of "Coincidental Card Stab" placed a prediction card aside. Spectator chose the Queen of Hearts and lost it in the deck. The deck was turned face up and spread and one card was found face down between the two black queen. The prediction card was shown to be, "Lucy in the Sky--the Queen of Diamonds. "
James Munton performed an undated version of McCombical Prediction where the spectator was given choice from 8 cards. Cards were shown to audience and all the cards were Ace of Diamonds. Spectator selected card and did not show it to anyone. A frame was brought out with a prediction inside. When it was shown, the prediction said Ace of Diamonds but when the selected card was shown it was a Queen of Diamonds. James pulled the Ace out of the frame and it changed to the Queen of Diamonds.
Jessica Gilkey performed her version of the Hot Rod.
Hugh Turley not to be out done performed his version of Zen's cards across-- Two spectators were selected. One counts 10 cards into Hugh's right hand. The other spectator counts 10 cards into his left hand. He hands one set of cards to one spectator and covers those cards with a silk. The other spectators sits on the other set of cards. Hugh waved his magic wand and made one card go from under the silk to the cards under the other spectator. He did this 3 times and when the spectator stood up and counted the cards he was sitting on, he had 13 diamonds.
Matt Hiller showed us his handling of the Hot Rod which he named the LSD Rod
in honor of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds."
Eric Redman related a story about "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" using Color Monte to illustrate his story.
Joe Largess told the story of 4 Robbers (the 4 Queens) who broke into a building (lost in 4 places in deck) however when Police arrived and all 4 robbers were found at once.
Ray Eyler preformed the Emerson & West effect "Gems" where in Lord Munton's Blue Sapphire, Ruby, Emerald and Pearls started disappearing from his safe one at a time. When the police are called, all of the gems are found to be safe in the wall safe.
Jim Flanagan following the theme using "Lucy & Diamonds" had a spectator shuffles a small packet of cards. They are placed in two rows and a second spectator chooses a row of cards. Spectator selects a card and Jim removes his wallet and takes out a card that matches the selected card. The card from the wallet has a picture of Lucy from Peanuts on the back.
Steve Javes playing to the theme with a presentation of the Penny/Dime trick placed a penny, dime and box of matches is placed on the table. The matches are placed on table around the penny in the shape of a diamond. The match box is placed on top of the penny and matches. The box is removed and the dime is in the diamond on the table and the penny is in the match box.
Larry Lipman provided comedy relief by leading members in singing lyrics to ˜Lucy in the Sky". He then performed Butterfly Silks- Used bag to catch some butterflys (silks). One black and one white. He took out the silk and it was now one black and white caterpillar. He put that back into the bag and removed a large colorful butterfly (silk).
Since the net and hook had been brought out it thought that we had a perfect time to adjourn.
The gang then retired to the Reliable Source for more magic and camaraderie.
See you on the 16th
